What Is Clomiphene Citrate?

Clomiphene citrate is a fertility drug that is used to stimulate ovulation. It is also known by the brand names Clomid, Milophene, and Serophene. In addition to boosting ovulation, clomiphene citrate can also be used to test ovarian reserve levels. As a fertility treatment, clomiphene citrate is usually only used for a maximum of six months. If a pregnancy doesn’t occur during that timeframe, clomiphene citrate is probably not the right treatment for that patient.

Clomiphene citrate is usually given for five days at the start of a woman’s menstrual cycle. If the goal is to produce ovulation, the fertility doctor may experiment with different doses to find one that works. If the drug is being used to test ovarian reserves, a blood test will be performed after five days to test follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels. If the levels are normal, ovarian reserves are normal. If levels are elevated, ovarian reserves are low.
