What Is a Saline Sonogram?

If you have suffered the loss of a pregnancy, your fertility specialist might recommend undergoing a saline sonogram. A saline sonogram is a commonly performed diagnostic test to determine the underlying causes of infertility. It uses ultrasound technology to produce images of the uterus with sound waves. The fertility specialist can then examine these images for signs of uterine abnormalities.

Some of the abnormalities that may be detected with this test include uterine fibroids, uterine polyps, and endometrial adhesions, the latter of which refers to uterine scar tissue. During the test, the doctor inserts sterile saline into the uterus. Then, a transvaginal ultrasound is performed, which involves gently inserting a transducer into the vagina. This exam is painless; however, some mild cramping is normal.
