Reproduction Options for Female Couples

When you and your partner are ready to start your family, you do have other options available to you besides adoption. Fertility treatments provide the opportunity to raise your child from birth. When you meet with a doctor at a fertility clinic, the options available to you may include in vitro fertilization and intrauterine insemination.

In Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a safe and effective fertility option for many couples. It involves ovarian stimulation with medications to produce multiple eggs, followed by egg retrieval. Shortly after the eggs are retrieved, they are fertilized with sperm in a laboratory. After the embryos form, one or more healthy embryos are implanted into the uterus of a partner. Female couples often choose a variation on this procedure, called partner IVF. If you choose this option, one of you will undergo ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval, while the other will have the embryos implanted into her uterus. In this manner, both of you can share in the miracle of new life!

Intrauterine Insemination

If you and your partner decide that IVF isn’t right for you, you may wish to consider intrauterine insemination (IUI). An IUI procedure is performed close to ovulation. Sperm is specially prepared in a laboratory, and then it is deposited into the uterus. This procedure involves only a bare minimum of discomfort.

Sperm Donation

Regardless of which fertility option you and your partner choose, sperm donation will be involved. Some couples prefer to select an anonymous sperm donor from a sperm bank, while other couples may wish to ask a close friend to donate sperm. All sperm donors must undergo a screening procedure.
