The basics of the fertility physical exam

In order for a woman to become pregnant naturally, her ovaries must release healthy eggs into the fallopian tubes, the location of the fertilization process. Once an egg is fertilized, it must then travel to the uterus and implant in the uterine lining. Fertility issues can occur if there are issues with the ovaries, fallopian tubes or uterus.
Our DFW fertility doctors will perform a fertility physical exam to determine whether there are any problems or abnormalities in the reproductive system. The exam has two basic components.

  • The physical exam assesses your overall health and wellness. Your physician will perform a thorough examination, taking special care to evaluate your thyroid and breast health, which can provide clues about the causes of your infertility.
  • The gynecological exam is focused on your reproductive health. As part of this evaluation, your physician will perform a pelvic exam and a Pap smear to help evaluate your fertility.

The results of your physical and gynecological exam give your fertility specialist important information about your baseline fertility to help begin the diagnostic process.

Other fertility tests may be part of the fertility evaluation

The physical exam is a critical component of your fertility evaluation, but our DFW fertility doctors may also use other tests to develop a clearer understanding of your reproductive health.

  • Ovarian reserve testing is a blood test that is used to assess the quality and quantity of your ovulatory egg supply.
  • Antral follicle count is a vaginal ultrasound exam that allows your physician to count your resting follicles. This test can estimate your ovarian reserve and predict your response to medications for ovarian stimulation.
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is an x-ray exam that involves injecting dye into your uterus to check for blockages in your fallopian tubes. It also provides an excellent opportunity to view the uterus.
  • Semen analysis is used to determine whether your male partner has any issues with his sperm count, morphology or motility.

By performing the fertility physical exam and other fertility tests, your physician can accurately diagnose the cause of your infertility. An accurate infertility diagnosis leads to effective fertility treatment. Contact us today to learn more.
