Intrauterine Insemination, IUI

Dallas IVF offers intrauterine insemination, IUI, as a treatment for infertility

At Dallas IVF, our fertility specialists are committed to helping patients build families. One of the services that our Dallas fertility clinic recommends is intrauterine insemination, IUI, for couples with unexplained infertility, semen allergies, cervical issues or below-average sperm health. Also known as artificial insemination, this procedure bypasses the cervical canal and deposits washed and prepared sperm directly into the uterus.

There are several steps involved in a successful IUI cycle at Dallas IVF

artificial insemination, IUI Patients who visit our Dallas fertility clinic for IUI can take Clomid or gonadotropins to stimulate the ovaries or allow the ovaries to naturally grow eggs without medications. Regardless of whether medication is involved, artificial insemination is performed near the time of ovulation, using sperm that was collected from the male partner (or sperm donor) prior to the procedure. Before the procedure, all sperm are prepared in our state-of-the-art andrology laboratory to separate the active sperm from the inactive sperm.

Once the sperm sample is prepared, the woman will come to our office for the IUI procedure. During IUI, the physician will place a speculum into the patient’s vagina and insert a small catheter through the cervix. Once positioned, the physician will release the sperm inside the uterine cavity.

On average, IUI takes fewer than five minutes. After the physician transfers the sperm and removes the catheter, we recommend that the patient remain resting for an additional 10 minutes. However, she may resume all of her normal activities after that time period.

Dallas IVF also offers artificial insemination with donor sperm as a fertility option

Our Dallas fertility clinic also offers artificial insemination with donor sperm. The procedure is recommended for couples when the male partner is sterile, as well as for single women and lesbian couples who wish to start a family.

Donor sperm are obtained from FDA-approved cryopreserved sperm banks that follow mandated infectious disease screening. With the exception of using donor sperm, the preparation and procedure is identical to traditional IUI.

The chance of pregnancy following artificial insemination depends not on whether donor sperm is used, but the type of treatment the patient is undergoing.

  • In a natural cycle, pregnancy rates are 6-10%.
  • A Clomid cycle produces pregnancy rates of 8-12%.
  • A gonadotropin cycle has pregnancy rates of 15-25%.
