The Facts About Alcohol and Caffeine During Fertility Treatment

The facts about alcohol and caffeine during fertility treatmentYou’re not alone if you feel that you can’t start your day without a cup of coffee, or you like to relax in the evening with a glass of wine. However, the physicians at our DFW fertility center want women to avoid alcohol and caffeine during fertility treatment in order for them to have the best chance of becoming pregnant.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine during fertility treatment

Our DFW fertility center recommends that women reduce their caffeine consumption and stop drinking alcohol while undergoing fertility treatment. Many studies have shown that it is wise to avoid alcohol and caffeine during fertility treatment. One such study, “Alcohol and Caffeine Consumption and Decreased Fertility,” was published in Fertility and Sterility.

In this study, researchers followed more than 100 women who provided daily urine samples and information about their alcohol and caffeine consumption. The study showed that women were about 50% less likely to become pregnant when they drank alcohol. Caffeine consumption didn’t seem to reduce pregnancy rates on its own, but it may have enhanced the negative effect of alcohol on fertility.

However, another study performed by the National Institutes of Health, “Couples’ Pre-Pregnancy Caffeine Consumption Linked to Miscarriage Risk,” found that a woman is more likely to have a miscarriage if she and her partner drink two or more caffeinated beverages a day.

In light of these studies, the physicians at our DFW fertility center have the following recommendations for women undergoing fertility treatment.

  • Women should not drink alcohol during fertility treatments and pregnancy.
  • Women should reduce their caffeine consumption to one cup of coffee a day.

Fertility-enhancing lifestyle changes

It can be difficult to give up alcohol completely and to reduce caffeine consumption, but doing so can help make fertility treatments more successful. Our DFW fertility center also recommends that women maintain a healthy weight, eat a well-balanced diet and avoid smoking while undergoing fertility treatment. Making these healthy lifestyle changes can help enhance natural fertility.
