What is Intrauterine Insemination?

Intrauterine insemination is a procedure that injects sperm directly into the uterus to aid in conception. It may be performed if a couple suffers from certain fertility issues, such as poor quality sperm. Intrauterine insemination can also use donor sperm to achieve pregnancy. During intrauterine insemination, a small catheter is filled with a concentrated solution of sperm. The catheter is inserted into the uterus and sperm are released. It is a short, painless procedure that is performed during ovulation. Ovulation can be during the natural cycle, or it can be stimulated using medications such as clomiphene citrate or gonadotropin. After the procedure, the couple is sent home and should monitor for signs of pregnancy.
