IVF, also known as in vitro fertilization, is an assisted reproductive technology in which a woman’s eggs are manually fertilized in a laboratory dish. In vitro fertilization is often recommended for women who are struggling to achieve pregnancy due to endometriosis, or a condition in which the endometrium tissue normally found inside the uterus is displaced throughout the pelvic cavity. IVF may be right for you if your endometriosis is the result of a blockage within the fallopian tubes due to adhesions or scarring, which prevents the egg from becoming fertilized or traveling to the uterus after fertilization.

Fallopian Tube Damage

Even if you are not suffering from endometriosis, blockage or damage to the fallopian tubes may still occur and impede pregnancy. In most cases, fallopian tube damage or blockage is caused by chronic inflammation of the fallopian tubes due to a sexually transmitted infection such as chlamydia. However, as with fallopian tube blockages due to endometriosis, women suffering from this type of infertility can achieve pregnancy through in vitro fertilization.

Ovulatory Complications

Women who are unable to become pregnant due to an ovulation disorder may be candidates for IVF. This includes women whose ovaries have suffered from injuries or tumors that inhibit their abilities to produce eggs, as well as women who are taking certain medications for other conditions that inadvertently stop the ovulation process.
